Jil Sander @ UniQlo

On October 1st the streets outside UniQlo's flaghip on Oxford Street were filled with eager fashionistas waiting to get their hands on a piece of Jil Sanders new capsule collection, +J. I ask, why? Admittedly, the capsule collection perfectly defines Jil Sanders minimalist look, with long tailored formal coats, puffer jackets and all things black/grey/white.  However, how much credibility does Sanders really deserve? Fans of her work talk about the 'purity' of her designs, labelling her a perfectionist. Personally, i find her clothes dull and can't imagine anyone wearing them unless they are a mother or a career lady. And thats definitely underestimating how fashionable mothers and career ladies can be. Despite my dislike for Sanders designs, i have spotted a velvet v-neck top in the +J collection that i desperately want so perhaps i have been slightly hypocritical but i would say the velvet top isn't typical of her designs. All i know is, i would never, ever, spend £1000+ on a plain coat.

Sonia Rykiel Announces H&M Collection

Sonia Rykiel for H&M! She's bringing out a lingerie collection in AW09-10 and a knitwear collection in SS 10. Psyched! Let's hope it's a better collection than ...well...all the past collaborations?

Christopher Kane @ Topshop

Last week saw the launch of Christopher Kane’s new capsule collection for Topshop. The collection includes a variety of his signature looks, including bondage-tight sheer dresses, studded and embellished leotards, and neon bright body-con. However, these pieces seem to be a retrospective of his work, the entire collection being an amalgamation of past shows rather than a representation of his present works. For example, the neon yellow body-con ‘Bandage’ dress, priced at £50, is a clear reference to his first show, the SS07 collection that consisted of all things neon, as he wanted ‘to go as bright as possible’. Furthermore, the Crocodile Tee/Dress, a personal favourite of mine, reflects his 2010 Resort collection, filled with sinister and bold photographs printed on knee length tee-dresses. This collection has no relation to his official AW09 collection, which, perhaps taking inspiration from his Scottish roots, heavily features tartan prints and geometric patterned organza.

The only form of innovation in the collection comes in the form of the ‘Embellished Body Con’ dress, leotard and shorts, which seems to have taken inspiration from the Topshop girl herself, leotards and short-shorts being all the rage at Topshop this season. Priced quite decently at £125 a dress, this collection, however unoriginal, is bound to sell out so get yourself down to the shops and bag yourself a piece of fashion history!
